Wheel Chair Accessible RV

Wheel Chair accessible Winnebago Adventurer Motorhome!!

We had a customer, with a not so common request of a wheel chair accessible motorhome.  Through Winnebago's specialty vehicle department we were able to custom order a 37', triple slideout class A, Adventurer motorhome, to meet all the customer's needs.

Here's a few of the things we had done to make their dream of RVing a reality.

First off we had to have the entrance door widened to accommodate the width of a wheel chair.  In order to get the customer safely into the motorhome without even having to leave the wheel chair, we had a SuperArm lift installed that attaches directly to the chair.  The lift comes with a remote that you can lower down and attach straps directly to the wheel chair and gently lift the passenger up and into the RV.

One obstacle in doing this is the electric step of the motorhome is in the way of getting close to the motorhome.  Also a Class A motorhome always has a couple steps inside at the entrance door as well which need to be covered.  We had a hinged step well cover with a gas strut installed, that when lowered would cover the open steps inside and would also activate a switch that retracted the electric steps outside.  This gave plenty of room without obstacles to safely lift the occupant into the RV.

In order to have the SuperArm lift installed we had to have an interior wall modified to make room for the lift as well as the relocation of switches and wiring.  Also the modification of bathroom cabinets and countertop in the adjacent bathroom.

This particular motorhome had the one and a half bathroom feature, with a half bath mid coach and a full en suite at the rear off the bedroom.  For the master en suite we had walls widened and installed an accordion folding privacy door to create maximum accessibility into the bathroom.  This included the relocation of some more wiring and switches.  The shower was modified to be a complete roll in shower, with reinforced shower walls and shower surround.  An adjustable height hand held shower head, anti-scald valve, water barrier threshold and over sized wrap around curtain were also installed.

Everyone should be able to enjoy the beautiful view out the huge front panoramic windshield so the front passenger seat was removed so our client could easily place their wheel chair there while travelling. They were having a device installed aftermarket to secure the chair for travel.

Along with all the major things all the small things like modifying floor tiles and adjusting all the finishing trims were done to give the RV a polished look.

The narrowest part in the motorhome was between the bed and the opposing built in cabinetry which was 32", but the bed had an electronic recline feature which added about another foot of clearance when retracted.  The next narrowest part was between the mid bathroom wall and the fridge and pantry which was a wide 43" giving our customer plenty of space to manoeuvre around the inside of the coach.

If you would like a motorhome like this or something similar please feel free to contact us, we would love to help make it happen for you!
